Gold Coast #2 - Movieworld

Day 2- 5th Sep 2007 (Wednesday)

Slept like a baby. Totally knocked out! Rushed (as usual) to have breakfast in the hotel before taking the bus (door to door) at 1020 to Movieworld.

Movieworld is part of Warner Brothers. It's disppointingly small. Around 1/3 of disneyland - Tokyo? But learning to takie things easy and slow, we slowly walked, posed and queued for rides. Took pixs with Bugs Bunny, & Tweety.

Spied Wonder woman (sexy), Porky pig (cute),

Austin Powers (groovy), Batman (the body! with fake nipples *snickers*) and someone in green whom we didn't recognised (so sad for him.. no one took any pixs with him)
Also spied scooby doo & friends and the family of Shrek during the parade.

with Daffy duck.

The rides were fun! Especially superman escape!

it's heart stopping where you can be taken from 0 to 100km in 2 seconds! and it's so exciting, I couldn't stop screaming! The whole ride completed in mins. it's exhilerating!
I was initially hesitant about taking the ride after being scared off by Final Destination 3 where teh train got derailed and the people in the seats got flung off. And yes... the recent roller coaster incident in Tokyo where people go injured.

BUT!! I have got to take this ride! I have been trying out rides since I reached the height limits.. so I have got to! and I did! =))
The Shrek 4D performance was good with spiders on our feet and mucous from Donkey's nose and Twinklebell dangling right in front of us. Scooby doo ride was cool! Not too kiddy with the sharp turns in total darkness with disco lights swimming. Nice!

Last ride I chickened out was the Batman ride. The ejection ride aka Batman flying was not really my type. tried Drop zone before.. this is the opposite, seats were ejected high into the air instead of sudden drop from the top.
He sure had fun.
That's hubby on the extreme right.

check out Batman on the left and superman on the right.

Lunch we had hotdog. (Long dog). we shared our meal in order not to be too full for the rides,. but look at the hot dog!

it's huge! The hotdog, sandwich between baguette is huge! 6 inches?
You know, I love their fries. it's soft and taste really good. it's squishy.
With all these carbos i'm consuming.. i really put on weight.
weell... holidays are meant to eat, sleep and spend $$$$ (oh yeah).

Dinner, we decided to try pizza from across the road. We had one slice of Hawaiian & Pepperoni (AUD $3 each) and a beef and lamb kebab (AUD $ 6.90) and we bought a bottle of wine at AUD $12.99. Rosemount Estate Riesling and drank our fill.

It taste fruity, lime and pear, smooth finish , very full of flavour. Must say it taste good. First time I tried this type of grape.
Rosemount esate cost almost S$ 30 to S$ 40 per bottle in Sg. I love their Merlot but it's very ex. And between the 2 of us, it's hard to finish a bottle of wine.
The kebab meat is so soft and so plentiful. it's so good. I ate kebab at least 3 times this trip!

We kept all our drinks out in the balcony to keep them cool. The news informed that it will rain for the next 2 days. (Thurs and Fri). Oh boy. I didn't pack enough thick clothes and I need a scarf. *sniffles*

I should sleep.

Gold Coast #1 - Disorientated, Caffeine and Glow worms

Day 1- 4th Sep 2007 (Tuesday)

This is a transcription from a Courtyard's notepad... I wrote this on the nite itself.. wanted to capture the moments of emotions that I felt that nite. I snuggled in bed .. with a pen and just kept scribbling...

I felt disorientated once the airplane landed in Brisbane airport at Aust 7AM (Sg- 5AM).. I slept very little on the plane, distracted by 2 episodes of engaging House and whilst watching Cold Case and Law and Order.. I dozed off.
I wanted to skip supper altogether.. opting for sleep.. but glad that I didn't. I ate- Nice smelling yummy salami & roast tomato spagetti. Breakfast was chocolate crossiant with fruits, coffee and almond cookies.
On and off, I managed a total of approx 3 hrs of sleep. I reached Brisbane in a daze.
it was crowded. we took an hr to get out of the airport checks. Got a littel impatient with a group of chinese tourists who has filed to complete the declaration formand had to be led aaway by the immigration officers. They, I later realised are not stupid .. they.. belonged to NTU business faculty- FYP 2007 trip. But they looked like in the late 30s to 50s. Strange. Post grad?

Another hr of bus ride, we finally reached Gold Coast- Courtyard by Marriot.
We got upgraded to a nice Ocean view hotel room. up on the 29th floor.
The room was so- so in deco.

The room looks a little old.. bathtub very shallow.. with a note by Courtyard that if the water flows and damage the carpet, we have to pay. So no bathtub soaks for the trip.. =( The rest of the amenities were sufficient and reasonable. Coffee and Tea were such a blessing! I was cold and had to keep myself warm by drinking hot tea.

The ocean view was however, a privilege! As the weather was a little dreary and rainy..and the stormy clouds looms above..the sea looks unfriendly.

We explored part of Surfers paradise. Good that the hotel was right smack in the middle of it!
Had yummy lunch at Seafood Mania The fish and chips was real fresh! taste of the ocean! Love the fries! it's huge and soft! the soggy kind i liked!

Hubby had chicket cutlet. He says it wasn't as nice as the fish.

Had caffe latte from Starbucks. walked somemore to shops, DFS and drank cappacino from Zaraffa's Coffee.

The cream, the milk and froth, the presentation was perfect!

Australia's milk are full cream and taste very different from home. Need to get use to it. (Now I love it! I miss the coffee, the aroma and the feeling of coffee drinking in the nice environment)

I needed my Caffeine- FAST! Need time to get used to this relaxed pace. Just have to be patiernt and not rush. Need to get into the holiday mode. To switch off.. to enjoy the time spent with my dearie.

Night falls.

It rained and rained.
And it rained even heavier when we went for the glow worm tour at Hinterland.
Australia's largest area of sub tropical rainforest and 300km of valley trails.
Springbrook- Natural Bridge.
Together with 18 Japanese tourist, we trekked in the rainforest dark, cold and in our ponchos in the wet wet weather.
We were the only 2 "Singa" ( as what they called us) and being English speaking, we had the luxury of having our own personal tour guide. Tah dah- Shane! A fifty plus humorous man who doubles as both our driver and our eco friendly guide.

It was a very unbelievable night. To be guided by faith, dearie and this man with his flashlight and our little glow in the dark bangles and a small torch light into literally the dark.
No kiddling. It was dark adn wet. sloushy shoes and i got a little freaked when Shane told us that there may be leeches sticking around on our wet shoes and skin... he reassured that in his years of exprerience, he never spooted a leech... with my luck, i wasn't so sure. Eww. Ha ha anyway, as i was saying, the feelin was remarkable. to be this close to nature and not knowing what goes on beyond the next step, what we would see or feel, or would i slip and fall down to dunno where or into some river.... ok.
Shane gave insightful info on the rainforest, the plants and the trees and all the work of mother's nature.
He showed us Buttress roots, ferns, water vines (smooth , containes water . good to know if you are stuck for any reason in the rainforest and needs water while awaiting resuce) and most amazingly... THE STRANGLER FIG. (picture will appear later in other post) this tree strangles! The fig seed falls onto the crown of any tree by a flying bird. it grows downwards, the roots engulfing the primary tree. strangling it to nothingness and reducing it to a hollow trunk in a thousand years. I felt and told Shane that i felt like i was walking into the unknown... into a set of Harry Potters and that a dragon may just be in there..
it was an amazing feeling.. to walk further into the cave by the waterfall and switching off all the torch light, to be greeted by thousands of bright green lights. This, ladies and gentlemen are the glow worm. it's like stars in the dark. it's amazing, beautiful and breath taking! you can see the light but you can't see the worm. they are up in nooks and cracks of the cave wall. they are spectacular. so beautiful.

read more about the pretty worms.
http://maguires.com/glow_worms/about_worms.htm

Shane is an amzing man. He who has a passion for what he does, this job. He took classes to learn, to train to be a guide. He took exams and became qualified. He want to do more than being a driver. His other colleagues are not keen. He is the only one.

check out the tour when you are in Queensland.
http://www.glowwormtours.com/

We had fun. we were drenched. Shoes were soaked, jean soaked. We joined the "no dinner" tour, and had supper - lamington (sticky, black "kueh" with coating of coconut (i think) and hot tea and coffee. we reached the hotel and i was hungry. No food. nothing is open at 10PM unless we really searched. I drank more tea and resolved to stock up on snacks. we (mainly hubby) ironed the jeans and blow dry our shoes.
He's tired, so am i. i want to write. i like this reflection of this day's end. of it being fresh in my dreamy mind.
i'm running out of paper, may have to get a decent notebook.

It's a rainy day. I love the rain.how small the droplets are.. it's like mist. how they gently fall. Love the coffee, Love watching jap girls (they are EVERyWHERE! and always fashionable). Love the beauty of the colony of glow worms taht shinesa grennish light in the cavern's roof at Nature Bridge. Love the feel of the rain on my face when I looked up to admire the crowns of tree but hate the wet shoes and feet. And i'm cold. He's tired. i should sleep. Nitez.

And thanks for reading this long post.

Hubby's Birthday

As I was saying, hubby is a simple man, we had a quiet celebration at home on Sun. Mum cooked steam fish, roast chicken meat , watercrass soup and we had a birthday cake.
The birthday cake was actually our wedding cake that we didnt collect from Raffles.
When he went to collect the cake on Sun, he was informed that the pastry chef wasn't happy with the quality of the cake, therefore, wasn't able to give it to him.
Instead, they hand delivered the cake to our home in the evening! My! What kind of service was that? We are duly impressed!

The design of the cake left much to e desired. It's coated in pink icing with some fake flowers (guess since it's for wedding.. but yucks..old fashioned 60s, 70s design..) but after removing the thick pink icing from the cake, the chocolate cake is heaven. Thick chocolate, spongy and warm.. it fills the mouth.
#will show the pix of cake if I remember in future#

Using HSBC 1 for 1 voucher, we ate at Patara Fine Thai at Tanglin Mall yesterday.
It's not too bad. the is not nice. meat is hard, the fats not smooth like the one we had at Food for Thought.
But try the Phuket Tulip crab curry. the meat is plentiful. We also had the New Zealand lamb, nice! No "smell", tender, the chilli was shiok but as the restaurant was really cold, the lamb turns cold pretty fast. Served with spring roll and salad.

Happy Birthday once again! muakz.

Happy birthday Dearie!
it's your day today.
Wish I could make it spectacular for you.
Love you lots!

food for thoughts for our birthday

So we (Renai, Roy, Hubby and myself) gathered at Lorraine's newly opened deli "Food for Thought" at South Bridge Road, opposite the National Library for a celebrations of birthdays.
Both Renai and hubby falls on the same day.Lorraine on the 30th and mine is one week later from today.

I like the concept of the deli, it's warm, cosy, the set up english with cupcakes and many cakes, brownies, cookies and handwritten chalk on all the blackboards.
The menus, the name of the chef and waiters and waitresses which their quirks are all listed.
It's gets a little crowded as diners started arriving at 7.30 pm.
but it's friendly!

We ordered the sandwich sampler set for four and we had the Shitake mushroom fennel soup and the very delicious potato Leek bacon soup. it's so good and sinful (hubby had it) and salty due to the bacon.. but i like! My shitake was good and healthy, no cream was used for th soup and there were sooo many shitake mushrooms and it's very filling.
we also had a chinese casear salad and

this..

my favourite! it's call TLC (Tomato, Lemongrass and corns). very unusual. with olive oil ( i think) dressing. i just like it's taste.
Their slow roasted pull pork sandwich is also my favourite, together with the braised pork sandwich - very sinfu! But gosh, it melts. We didn't try their desseert as Renai baked some cupcakes that she requested Lorraine to heat up in the oven. We had the "Kan Bei- cheers" with the cupcakes with Lorraine and Yee and set off shortly as the shop is closing.
check out www.foodforthought.com for the yummy menu with pictures attached! =)

We ended up in Ridout Mac. Watched their wedding videos, shared our wedding pictures, both studio and actual days (very nice), chatted and realised that one year ago, we were all single.. now married. Joked that babies would be next. It's a wonder how topics changed as we grow old. how we change in our thinking. Not jaded, but somehow resigned that this is a natural progression. We chatted between photographs, cuppacino, ice tea and lime juice and started yawning. (It's 1130pm). another sign of age creeping up on us.

My present!

i know it's not incredibly romantic and it's late... (heh.. anniversary gift) but i thank you for this lovely pressie! Yup! We are practical people!
I haven't watched it fully (just 30 mins to test the disk)but the graphics and the time, effort taken to film this documentary is simply spectacular!

WOW

Movies we caught between us...

snuggled together...

As promised- Black ink Squid

There you go! Fettucine cooked with black squid ink. top with sun dried tomatos and grated cheese. An interesting dish!
our mouth is black, we need black napkins, the tissues that we used to clean our lips are black.. we looked perpetually poisoned! hah!
no fishy taste. well cooked. too much for 1.. just nice fot 2. if you finished the entire plate, you may feel sick... too "jelate".
Love trying out food. and eversince i tried my black squid ink ice cream last year at Hakodate (hokkiado), i'm eager to try all food related to black squid ink.
There a shop , outside Golden village in great world city that sells squid ink bread! hmmm.... soft fluffy bread. shd taste good with dips.

Fettucine in Black Squid Ink $19 @Friends at Jelita
Not recomended for 1st dates, if you do survive that, then he/she is meant for you!

Kyushu Black Pig Bone Soup Shabu Shabu Chili Ramen

What a long name for a dish! But this is what I copied from the menu outside the restaurant.
Our favourite!
The soup was simmered for 2 days.. the pork is sliced so thinly and so soft that it almost melts in your mouth.
The soup is so good, rich and of course tasty. Chili is not overpowering and the noodle is cooked just nice.

Crispy Whitefish.
It's like fries, with a little salt on the side.
But the one we ate was cold. It would be better if it's hot and crunchy like the first time we ate it.
